This position may be seated at Hyundai Translead’s San Diego, CA, headquarters or at Hyundai Translead Manufacturing America’s Joliet, IL, manufacturing facility. Travel: San Diego-based employees can expect to travel up to 20%, including approximately 4 days per month to Joliet until a permanent cadence is established. Illinois-based employees can expected up to 10% travel, including travel to San Diego and other locations as business needs require. 

 

Pay Range: $129,455 - $182,700 annually

Job Summary

The Associate General Counsel partners with leaders and stakeholders across the enterprise to deliver practical guidance on labor and employment matters, manage disputes and litigation for our IL subsidiary, support the drafting and negotiation of contracts, and handle subsidiary corporate governance, with a particular emphasis on the operations of Hyundai Translead’s new Illinois manufacturing facility, Hyundai Translead Manufacturing America.

The role offers opportunity for an in-house labor and employment attorney to advise directly on labor and employment while expanding their practice into contract drafting and editing, as well as general legal advice and operational support for our U.S. manufacturing facility.

Essential Functions

  • Deliver labor and employment counseling support, including interpretation and application of workplace policies, practices, and applicable laws
  • Support labor and employment litigation and dispute-related matters, including coordination with internal partners and outside counsel
  • Draft, review, and negotiate agreements and legal documents to support operational and commercial needs
  • Provide timely, business-focused legal advice and support to internal stakeholders on a broad range of operational matters
  • Identify, assess, and communicate legal risks and practical mitigation options
  • Assist with development and maintenance of policies, templates, playbooks, and training materials
  • Serve as a senior legal advisor on labor and employment matters, providing practical guidance on complex, sensitive, and higher-impact matters under General Counsel oversight
  • Oversee employment litigation strategy and outside counsel management, including budgeting, staffing, matter progress, and alignment with business objectives
  • Lead review and negotiation of complex agreements and legal documents; drive improvements to templates, playbooks, and contracting processes
  • Serve as a senior legal partner for Hyundai Translead Manufacturing America, supporting day-to-day operations, subsidiary corporate governance, and cross-functional initiatives
  • Independently manage significant and sensitive legal matters and advise leaders, escalating significant, novel, or enterprise-impact issues to the General Counsel as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Functions (Continued)

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • JD, active bar license, or ability to timely obtain and maintain active license to practice law, CA or IL depending on location of role
  • 7 years of relevant legal experience
  • Significant labor and employment law experience, including leadership of complex counseling, litigation, and employment advisory matters, contract drafting, editing, and negotiation experience

Preferred Education and Experience Requirements

  • Experience with wage-and-hour workforce and complex workplace advisory matters
  • Illinois labor and employment law experience a considerable asset with California experience helpful
  • Substantial contract drafting, editing, and negotiation experience
  • Prior in-house experience strongly preferred
